GIA vs IGI vs AGS: Diamond Certifications Explained
A diamond certificate is like a passport for your stone. It tells you exactly what you're getting—and from an unbiased third party. But not all certifications are equal.
Why Certification Matters
Without certification, you're relying on the seller's word for a diamond's quality. A certificate from an independent lab provides:
- Objective grading of the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat)
- Measurements and proportions
- Fluorescence information
- Unique identification number
- Protection against fraud
The Major Labs
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
The gold standard.
- Most respected and consistent grading worldwide
- Invented the 4Cs grading system
- Strictest grading standards
- Best for natural diamonds
- Used by most high-end jewelers
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
Leading lab for lab-grown diamonds.
- Largest independent gem lab in the world
- Industry leader in lab-grown diamond certification
- Generally consistent but slightly more lenient than GIA on some grades
- More affordable certification = savings passed to consumer
AGS (American Gem Society)
The cut quality experts.
- Uses a 0-10 scale (0 = Ideal) instead of GIA's word-based system
- Particularly renowned for cut grading accuracy
- Uses advanced light performance analysis
- Respected but less widely used
Which Should You Look For?
For Natural Diamonds: GIA
GIA is the most trusted name in diamond grading. Their consistency means you can compare diamonds across different sellers with confidence.
For Lab-Grown Diamonds: IGI
IGI has become the standard for lab-grown diamond certification. Their grading is reliable and the lower certification cost keeps prices accessible.
Red Flags
- ❌ No certification at all
- ❌ In-house "certificates" from the seller (not independent)
- ❌ Certifications from unknown or obscure labs
- ❌ Seller who refuses to show the certificate before purchase
How to Verify
Every GIA and IGI certificate has a unique report number. You can verify it online:
- GIA: reportcheck.gia.edu
- IGI: igi.org/verify
At Katarina, every diamond we sell comes with certification from GIA or IGI. No exceptions.
