Moissanite has become a popular diamond alternative—but how does it really compare? Here's an honest, side-by-side look at both stones.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide, originally discovered in a meteor crater in 1893 by Dr. Henri Moissan. Today's moissanite is lab-created and designed specifically for jewelry.

Key Differences

Sparkle & Fire

Moissanite actually has MORE fire (rainbow flashes) than diamond. Its refractive index is 2.65-2.69 vs. diamond's 2.42. This creates a "disco ball" effect—beautiful to some, too flashy for others.

  • Diamond: Balanced brilliance and fire, classic sparkle
  • Moissanite: More rainbow flashes, especially in sunlight

Hardness

  • Diamond: 10 on the Mohs scale (hardest natural substance)
  • Moissanite: 9.25 on the Mohs scale (excellent durability)

Both are perfectly suitable for daily wear engagement rings.

Price

This is where the biggest difference lies:

  • A 1-carat diamond: $3,000-$12,000+ depending on quality
  • A 1-carat equivalent moissanite: $300-$600

Moissanite costs roughly 90% less than a comparable diamond.

Resale Value

  • Diamond: Retains some resale value (especially natural)
  • Moissanite: Very little resale value

Can People Tell the Difference?

To the casual observer? No. To someone who knows diamonds well? Possibly—moissanite's extra fire and slightly different light pattern can be noticeable, especially in larger stones. Under 1 carat, it's very difficult to distinguish.

Where Does Lab-Grown Diamond Fit In?

Lab-grown diamonds sit between moissanite and natural diamonds:

  • Price: 50-70% less than natural diamonds, but more than moissanite
  • Appearance: Identical to natural diamonds (it IS a diamond)
  • Durability: Same as natural diamond (hardness 10)

If you want a real diamond but at a lower price, lab-grown is the sweet spot.

Our Take

Both moissanite and diamonds are beautiful stones. If budget is your primary concern, moissanite is an excellent choice. If you want a real diamond at a great price, consider lab-grown. If tradition and resale matter, go natural.

At Katarina, we focus on real diamonds (both natural and lab-grown) because we believe in offering certified, lasting quality. But we respect every couple's choice.
